Protesting professors tear-gased in Karachi, scores injured, arrested

KARACHI Mar 30: Riot police fired water cannon and teargas shells at protesting teachers and professors who tried to march on Chief Minister House to stage a sit-in.

The police also resorted to baton-charge to disperse the protesting members of Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) near DG College.

Six teachers were reportedly injured and several others were arrested by the police.

Shafqat Ali, a senior teacher, is critically injured.

The SPLA leaders have called for the Sindh Government to dismiss a senior education officer, accusing him of misconduct and fraud.

Earlier, the SPLA and local administration held talks to end the protest amicably. The talks, however, failed, leading to a showdown between the police and protesters.
